Hi, I am a mathematician who really enjoys travelling. Hence, the main focus of my private websites is on these very topics: My pages on mathematics, which make up most of this site, deal with the mathematical olympiad and studying maths. My travels all around the globe are described in my blog.

The pages of my website are dealing with numerous different topics. However, some are dealt with much more extensively than others. Let me give you a short overview about the available content, and the respective topic's significance to me:
Travel
My biggest hobby – travelling – is actually out of scope of this website. About my travels, I am writing in my blog "Bernie's Journeys – Vienna and the Wide, Wide World".

My travels have led me (quite literally) all around the globe. Already in early childhood, I visited my grandparents in Carinthia regularly, and spent quite a few holidays in Greece together with my parents. In fall 2003, when I was on a study abroad at City College of New York, I discovered the real joy of travelling.

Since then, I have returned to North America several times – both to the United States of America, and also to Canada; from the Atlantic Coast in the East, over the Rocky Mountains, to the Pacific Coast in the West.
Moreover, I spent one month in Australia together with my father, exploring (the north-east of) the continent.

In early 2008, I visited South America for the first time, where I spent four weeks in Argentina and Chile. Finally, I travelled all around the world for eight months (in late 2008 and early 2009), focusing on New Zealand/South Pacific and Central America.
However, this was only the start: Since then, I have visited all continents (except Antarctica) on numerous trips of different lengths.

However, I did not neglect "Good old Europe". From 2003 until today, I have spent over half a year (on more than two dozen trips) travelling through different European countries.
Mathematics

My interest in mathematics started quite early already – even in childhood, I was already hooked. During my school time, I took part in the Mathematical Olympiad, a maths competition for high school students. After that, studying mathematics seemed the natural (if not only) choice.

My time at the Mathematical Olympiad is recounted in two diaries of the ÖPMW 1998 and the IMO 1999. During my studies, I wrote some short summaries of university courses I took at the UT Vienna. These summaries helped me a great deal when learning for my exams. However, most of them are in German, and none of them are updated any more.
RMS Titanic

During my teenage years, I read a lot about the history of the Titanic. For my "Matura" (the final examination in high schools in Austria) in 1999, I chose this topic as a special subject for my English exam. For this purpose, I had to write an essay, which was the basis for these web pages. The present version is pretty much the same as the one written in 1999. Currently, I have no intention to extend and/or update this essay any further.
Zivildienst
Finally, I am giving a short overview about the "Zivildienst" in Austria in the years 2000/01 (when I myself performed this alternative military service). As these few pages should only give a short retrospect, I do not intend to update them in the future.
