Mathematics

Overview > Mathematics in Natural Sciences

Mathematics is used in a lot of different branches of natural sciences. Most people only think of calculations in physics, but mathematics plays a very important role in a huge variety of disciplines of natural sciences: In biology, for instance, population modells may be developed with the help of mathematics (this is the subject of the course "Mathematical Ecology"). Moreover, one can study the behaviour of animals during turf wars with the help of game theory (which is done in the course "Evolutionary Strategies"), or answer questions concerning heredity and genetics (about the relative frequency of genes and genotypes, the probability of hereditary diseases, etc.), what is done in the course "Population Genetics".

In medicine, mathematical Modelling and Simulation can be very useful as well. For example, the spreading of infectious diseases (which is very important in Epidemiology) may be modelled mathematically.
